Our hygienist works in close collaboration with our dentists to ensure you receive effective preventive care and all the information you need to be able to care for your teeth properly at home. She will teach you top cleaning techniques and offer lifestyle advice to help you achieve optimum oral health.

The hygienist will work with you to ensure your gums are maintained in a healthy condition by removing plaque and tartar, which causes gum disease, and showing you how to keep teeth plaque-free between appointments.

It is important to try to minimise plaque and tartar deposits as they can cause gum inflammation (gingivitis). This can lead to the development of advanced gum disease (periodontitis), which can create significant problems and even tooth loss.

Preventive cleaning involves scaling and polishing: ‘scaling’ removes hardened plaque (tartar) and ‘polishing’ leaves teeth with a smooth surface so plaque is less likely to build up.

Prophy Flex for a perfect polish

For super spotless teeth, we offer the Prophy Flex air polishing system. This clever piece of kit is a high tech, more effective alternative to traditional polishing techniques for teeth that are heavily stained. Instead of using a polishing paste with a rotating rubber brush, it features a combination of water and pleasantly flavoured bicarbonate of soda to blast away plaque and stubborn stains. It also gets into those tricky to reach places for a more thorough clean.

A combination of regular visits to the hygienist and a good oral hygiene routine at home doesn’t just maintain your oral health, it can be beneficial for your general well-being too. Studies have shown a link between poor oral hygiene and the development of certain conditions, such as heart disease and strokes. Some people are also more at risk of gum disease, including diabetics and those with a genetic predisposition, so they may need to pay even closer attention to their dental health.
